  • An increase in hormone production stimulates the oil glands to produce excessive amounts of oil which may then combine with dead skin and clog the pores. With time, the pressure build and there is leakage in the surrounding tissues, bacteria flourishes in the clogged pore and the surrounding inflamed tissue results in a blemish. This is mostly common in teenage skin.
  • In adult skin, the blemishes are caused by a disorder in the general health, diet, stress, air pollution, reaction to cosmetics.
  • Illnesses, accumulation of toxins, problems with intestinal flora, food allergies or heredity are also sometime known to characterize blemishes in an adult skin.

The first and foremost step to achieve a healthy skin clear of blemishes is to cleanse and detoxify the skin. Compression is a step involving pre-cleansing the skin to soften the skin and loosen the soil and harmful waste to enhance the cleansing process. Cool water compresses are used on blemished skin (cool to tepid water) to refresh, tone, hydrate and suppress the inflammation of the skin. While compressing one should be careful not to use extreme water temperature as it can harm the tiny capillaries and suppress the glandular functions in the skin.

Daily cleansing of the skin is extremely important to remove dirt, soil, waste products and make up. Proper cleaning is the key to prevent blemishes of the skin. Don’t use soap on face. Try to use oil free cleansing gel on younger skin suffering with blemishes while oil free cleansing gel or well formulated cleansing milk should be used to clean the older skin with blemishes.

Using a toner after cleansing he skin acts as the second phase of cleansing as it clears off any residue left on the skin without making it dry; toners are also efficient in conditioning the skin. Look for toners which are natural, and contain herbal extracts along with aromatherapy hydrosols.

Remember moisturizing may be the last step in daily skin cleansing regime, but it is the most important step. Moisturization provides hydration which is beneficial for all skin types. Moisturizer is useful two fold; it provides a barrier layer preventing the loss of moisture and protects the skin from outside environment and secondly it has humectants which retain moisture next to the skin to prevent drying of the skin and signs of ageing.
